Now that fall has arrived, many boaters are looking forward to cruising their favorite lakes and rivers to admire the colorful leaves and enjoy the natural beauty of the season. But fall brings colder temperatures with it, which means you’ve got to try harder to stay warm, especially since the temperature out on the water can be several degrees cooler than on land. Here are our tips.

Layer Up

The best strategy for staying warm isn’t to toss a heavy overcoat on top of your street clothes and hope for the best. Instead, you should be more strategic in how you dress for your boat trip and wear layers that you can add to or remove as needed.

Start with insulating leggings and a thermal top, then add your jeans or khakis and a light wool sweater or long-sleeved shirt. You can put a fleece pullover on top of this and add your gloves, boots, scarf, and hat, and you’ll be cozy and warm. Plus, if one of your layers gets wet, you can simply bring some extra layers to change into as needed.

Pack Blankets & Snacks

A couple of wool or fleece blankets will help you and your passengers stay nice and cozy. Make sure you’ve also got some snacks so that people can keep their energy up: being cold burns more calories. Don’t forget to fill up a few thermoses with hot cocoa or tea!
