There are many different aspects to boat ownership, including some you may not have thought about before. For example, have you ever thought about etiquette, specifically when it comes to being at the marina amongst your fellow boaters? A rude and selfish boater can ruin the day for everyone around them, so if you want to make and keep a good impression at your local marina, it pays to follow these etiquette rules.

Go Slow

When you leave the dock or approach it, you need to keep your boat at a slow, even speed, rather than racing in at 45 miles an hour. Approaching the dock carefully at a slow speed helps to prevent any waves from being kicked up and it reduces the risk that you’ll hit someone or something en route.

Don’t Dawdle

Once you’re ready to leave the dock or the fueling station, you need to make haste. Try not to dawdle around once your boat’s been fueled because this takes up other boaters’ valuable time. Be ready to go once you’ve got your boat in motion. Also, don’t linger in the way of boats coming back to the marina.

Be Respectful

When you’re hanging out on your boat at the marina or lounging on the dock with your friends, try to remember that other people are out there, too. Don’t leave any trash on the dock and make sure that your boat equipment and gear is securely stored. This includes any dock ropes, which shouldn’t be scattered all over the pier. Keep your voices low after sunset and don’t play loud music or be rambunctious.
