It’s no doubt happened to you or one of your passengers before: you’re sitting on your boat or standing at the helm and, all of a sudden, you feel dizzy, nauseated, and weak. The boat’s motion seems to overwhelm you and you’re not sure which way is up anymore. This is the form of motion sickness that is commonly referred to as “seasickness.”

You may be wondering what you can do to prevent this malady that waylays so many boat trips. As your Connecticut boat dealer, we’ve got some helpful strategies for you to try.

Don’t Drink Alcohol, And Stay Hydrated

Alcoholic beverages are dehydrating and tend to make you feel nauseated when you overindulge in them. If you’ve gone on a drinking spree before your boat trip, you’re much more likely to feel sick while aboard. Try to avoid drinking alcohol for a day or two before your trip and don’t drink any during the voyage. Instead, stick to drinking water to keep yourself hydrated.

Try Some Herbal Remedies

Ginger and peppermint are two herbal remedies that have been used for centuries as anti-nausea agents. Sipping on ginger or mint tea or eating candies with these flavors can help you feel more settled and less sick.

Avoid Odors

Strong smells like a livewell, cooking food, or a bag of trash can make you feel instantly sicker, even if you didn’t before. To prevent this, try to avoid all strong odors on the boat. If you’re in charge, you can dispose of the trash before you head out or keep it in an airtight container, and you can avoid cooking food or using a livewell. If you’re a passenger, then you may have to just find a part of the boat where the smells don’t permeate.
